Heating Repair in Colorado Springs: When to Call (and When It's a Quick Fix)

Your furnace picks the coldest night of the year to act up. It’s practically a law of physics — or at least of Colorado living. Before you search for heating repair in Colorado Springs at 11 PM, know this: a surprising number of “furnace emergencies” have simple causes.

At Eagle River Service Company, we’ve spent 40+ years repairing heating systems across Monument, Colorado Springs, Castle Rock, and Parker — and we’d rather see you solve a simple problem yourself than call us out for one. Here’s our honest breakdown.

Technician holding a guage, fixinf a furnace

Safety first — before anything else

If you smell gas, a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or you see smoke, leave the house immediately. Do not operate electrical switches or attempt troubleshooting. Call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Everything below assumes none of those are happening.

Safe checks you can try first

Check the thermostat. It sounds obvious, but it’s the most common culprit. Is it actually set to heat? Is the battery low? Is someone in the house adjusting it without telling anyone? Start here before anything else.

Check the filter. A clogged filter can restrict airflow and shut the system down. If your filter looks gray and matted, replace it — following your system’s instructions, with the system off — then see if the furnace behaves.

Check the power switch and look at the breaker panel. Your furnace has its own power switch (usually looks like a light switch on the unit). Make sure it’s on. If a breaker is tripped, don’t keep resetting it — note it and call a professional, as repeated tripping can indicate an electrical problem that needs a pro.

Listen for the sequence. When you turn the heat up, a healthy furnace clicks, the igniter or pilot lights, the blower starts. Where the sequence stops tells a technician a lot — pay attention to what happens and what doesn’t.

If any of these solve it, you just saved yourself a service call. If not, it’s time for a professional.

When to stop and call for heating repair

Some problems are genuinely beyond a homeowner’s toolkit — and attempting them yourself can be unsafe.

No ignition. If the furnace clicks but never lights, you could have an igniter or flame sensor issue. These are common repairs — but they involve gas and electricity, which is professional territory.

Short cycling. If your furnace starts and stops every few minutes, something is wrong. It could be a thermostat issue, an airflow restriction, or a failing component. Short cycling wears a system out fast — don’t ignore it.

Persistent odors. A faint, brief odor on first startup of the season can be dust burning off. A burning smell that persists, or any smell of gas, is not — for gas, leave the house and call your gas utility. For persistent burning odors, shut the system down and call for service.

Rising bills with a consistent thermostat setting. If your heating costs are climbing and your habits haven’t changed, your system may be losing efficiency — usually worth having looked at.

The honest repair-first approach

Here’s what makes us different: when you call for heating repair, we start with the question “what’s the simplest thing that fixes this safely?” Not “what’s the most expensive thing we can sell.” If a repair will carry your system through the season safely, we’ll tell you — and a furnace tune-up and safety check gives you a real picture of your system’s condition before you commit to anything.

We’re family-owned, intentionally small, and our founder is still hands-on after four decades. And if you’re a senior or military family in our service area, ask about our free troubleshooting — it’s been part of how we do business for years.

The smart move before the deep cold

The best heating repair is the one you never need. Book an air duct + HVAC system cleaning this fall and we’ll include a free furnace startup and tune-up. Because we’re a licensed HVAC contractor, the cleaning reaches the components a standard duct cleaner can’t — the blower, the secondary heat exchanger, the upstream side of the coil. One visit, and you’ll know where your furnace stands before the coldest months arrive.
